(materials) A fine mixture of quartz and fireclay which is used to line certain furnaces for metallurgical processes. (petrology) A fine, hard quartzose sandstone; used to make refractory silica brick to line furnace reactors. ganister A product made by mixing ground quartz with a bonding material such as fireclay.
