Gastric Lavage 

a medical procedure that consists in the repeated introduction and removal of water, a weak solution of sodium bicarbonate, or a solution of potassium permanganate into and out of the stomach by means of a stomach pump. Gastric lavage is used in the first aid of poisoning and in the treatment of stasis of the contents of the stomach. It is prescribed by a physician because with some conditions, for example, with complicated gastric ulcer, it is contraindicated. At home, the stomach may be washed out by inducing vomiting; irritating the mucosa of the pharynx and the root of the tongue with the fingers after considerable liquid intake is a way to induce vomiting.
