Gantry

 

in engineering, a load-bearing Π-shaped structure consisting of two side posts, or legs, or four posts interconnected in pairs and a top girder or frame. It is a component of such machines as the gantry-type traveling crane or gantry machine tools. Gantries are used to maintain the working element of a machine or other assembly at a constant elevation. They may be fixed or may move along guide tracks or rails.
