Maia (mā`ə, mī`ə). 1 In Greek mythology, oldest of the Pleiades Pleiades, in Greek mythology, seven daughters of Atlas and the nymph Pleione. According to one legend they were the attendants of Artemis and were changed into stars by the gods when they were pursued by the amorous hunter Orion. 2 In Roman mythology, goddess of fertility; also called Maiesta. She was often identified with Bona Dea Bona Dea (bō`nə dē`ə), in Roman religion, ancient fertility goddess worshiped only by women; also called Fauna. How to thank TFD for its existence?
