geometric mean

[¦jē·ə¦me·trik ′mēn]
(mathematics)
The geometric mean of n given quantities is the n th root of their product. Also known as geometric average.

geometric mean

(mathematics)
The Nth root of the product of N numbers.

If each number in a list of numbers was replaced with their geometric mean, then multiplying them all together would still give the same result. The geometric mean thus gives an average "factor" in a context where numbers are multiplied together, e.g. compound interest.

According to State guidelines, water quality is monitored using fecal coliform concentrations as the standard, with fishing streams listed as impaired if the geometric mean of four water samples in a thirty day period exceeds 200 colony forming units (cfu) per 100 ml between May and October or 1,000 cfu/100 ml between November and April; or if a single water sample exceeds 4,000 cfu/100 ml between November and April (4, 5).

An implication of this assumption is that the unilateral price indices should be constructed using a Jevons-style geometric mean method, in which the growth rate of the index equals the growth rate of the ratio of the current period's geometric mean divided by the geometric mean in the previous period.
