A 37-year-old man, a software developer, presented after having undergone 3 years of treatment with multiple medications, voice therapy, and seven operations to eliminate a left arytenoid-body granuloma that caused odynophonia. Routine histologic analysis of all nodules showed an intense inflammatory granuloma around several cross-sections of filarial nematodes (Figure 1A). Using their agent-based model, Kirschner and her colleagues found that out of 27 parameters examined, only 7 strongly affected whether a granuloma would turn necrotic. |
