budgerigar (bŭj`ərēgär'): see parakeet parakeet or parrakeet, common name for a widespread group of small parrots , native to the Indo-Malayan region and popular as cage birds. Parakeets have long, pointed tails, unlike the chunky lovebirds with which they are sometimes confused.
