With very fine sands and in thinly stratified formations, it may be necessary to place a gravel pack around the screen to increase the hydraulic conductivity in the near well zone (a function analogous to placing high conductivity grout in the closed-loop borehole).
To deal with the sand, a lot of early work was done with screen devices and gravel packs installed around the well perforations (openings in the production tubing of the well) to prevent the sand from entering the wells.
The SL 195 QQ#149 well is still cleaning up following another successful gravel pack recompletion with an expected production rate of 70 BOPD within the next week.
