Grayish brown veins outline patches of a color that is either violet or magenta or something in between, depending on how the light strikes Strobilanthus leaves at any particular moment. Then, grayish brown against the usual gray-blue haze, the steep hillsides and canyons fill in, and at about five miles out you may see the first signs of human development -- typically, the huge, cylindrical Casino, signature structure of Avalon, larger of the island's two communities. Geese honk to locate a mate, ants leave a scent trail for other ants to follow, the stickleback fish changes from grayish brown to blue with a red belly when it wants to attract a mate, and other deep-sea fish "light up" to lure mates - or prey. |
