cracking Chemistry the process in which molecules are cracked, esp the oil-refining process in which heavy oils are broken down into hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight by heat or catalysis cracking [′krakĀ·iŋ] (chemical engineering) A process that is used to reduce the molecular weight of hydrocarbons by breaking the molecular bonds by various thermal, catalytic, or hydrocracking methods. (engineering) Presence of relatively large cracks extending into the interior of a structure, usually produced by overstressing the structural material.
