a rope, chain, wire, etc., for anchoring an object, such as a radio mast, in position or for steadying or guiding it while being hoisted or lowered Guy Buddy, real name George Guy. born 1936, US blues singer and guitarist guy [gī] (engineering) A rope or wire securing a pole, derrick, or similar temporary structure in a vertical position. guy A supporting rope, cable, or wire which is anchored at one end and tied to an object or structure in order to stabilize it. Guy (Russian, leer; from Dutch leier), a rope on a ship used to set fore-and-aft sails, guard deck openings, guard open decks where there are no protective coamings or bulwarks, or suspend hoses while transferring liquid fuel when under way. On modern ships the permanent or movable guard rails consist of metal stanchions at least 1 m high with holes through which two or three guys (manropes) are passed.
