(Russian, leer; from Dutch leier), a rope on a ship used to set fore-and-aft sails, guard deck openings, guard open decks where there are no protective coamings or bulwarks, or suspend hoses while transferring liquid fuel when under way. On modern ships the permanent or movable guard rails consist of metal stanchions at least 1 m high with holes through which two or three guys (manropes) are passed.
