gymnasiumIn Germany, a state-maintained secondary school that prepares pupils for higher academic education. This type of nine-year school originated in Strasbourg in 1537. Though the usual graduation age is 19 or 20, pupils may terminate their studies at age 16 and enter a vocational school. Secondary or postprimary education is also provided by middle schools (Mittelschulen), teachers' colleges, and commercial schools. gymnasium 1. a large room or hall equipped with bars, weights, ropes, etc., for games or physical training 2. The heroes of Greek society during its period of greatest intellectual glory were men who exercised nude together in gymnasia and dined and drank without women present. The Hebrew gymnasia (high schools modeled on the European example) offered instruction in such basic subjects as the Hebrew language and literature, mathematics, physics, chemistry, English, another foreign language, history (general and Jewish), Bible. The poor did benefit, however from philanthropically-endowed community institutions such as gymnasia and public baths. |
