a handsaw for cutting metal, with a hard-steel blade in a frame under tension hacksaw [′hak‚sȯ] (engineering) A hand or power tool consisting of a fine-toothed blade held in tension in a bow-shaped frame; used for cutting metal, wood, and other hard materials. hacksaw A saw having a blade (typically fine-toothed) which is supported in an adjustable metal frame; used for cutting metals. Hacksaw (1) A handsaw in which a blade is the working member. A hacksaw for metalworking consists of a frame with a replaceable saw blade fastened to it. A hacksaw for cutting wood has a handle fastened to one end of a wedge-shaped blade. Hacksaws are also used for cutting other materials.
