machine dependent Refers to applications that run in only one series of computers such as Intel x86 or IBM's System z mainframe. Also called "hardware dependent." In contrast, "machine independent" means that the application can run in a variety of different families of computers. Machine dependent is sometimes used synonymously with "platform dependent."
