heap sampling [′hēp ‚sam·pliŋ] (mining engineering) Method of ore sampling in which the material is shoveled into a conical heap which is then flattened with a spade and shoveled into four equal heaps, two of which are retained, crushed, mixed, and formed into another, smaller cone; the process is repeated until the required small sample is produced.
