(meteorology)
In urban areas with tall buildings, an atmospheric condition in which heat and pollutants create a haze dome that prevents warm air from rising and being cooled at a normal rate, especially in the absence of strong winds.

The topic of urban heat occupied many researchers who gathered in January for the 2009 annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society, held appropriately enough in Phoenix, the site of many recent studies of the urban heat island effect.
On a larger scale, the benefits of green roofs include the above, as well as a 65-100 percent reduction of stormwater runoff, improved water quality of that runoff, increased urban greenspace, reduced heat island effect, improved air quality, increased wildlife habitat, and views and access to nature.
