Heckelphone
a baritone oboe; a woodwind instrument created in 1904 by the master German instrument maker, W. Heckel. Pitched an octave below the normal oboe, its tone is melodious and expressive with a nasal timbre. It is used occasionally in the orchestra (for example, in R. Strauss’ Salome and Elektra). The piccolo heckelphone is pitched a fourth higher than the oboe and possesses a brighter timbre. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
