1. land lying behind something, esp a coast or the shore of a river
2. remote or undeveloped areas of a country

hinterland [′hin·tər‚land]
(geology)
The region behind the coastal district.
The terrain on the back of a folded mountain chain.
The moving block which forces geosynclinal sediments toward the foreland.
