Jungle is characterized by high humidity and resultant abundance (both in numbers and variety) of flora and concomitantly of fauna. Jungle is not a strict ecological term and is often applied to any impenetrable thicket or tangled mass of vegetation.

The inspiration for that gesture came directly from a true story told to Steinbeck by a man named Frank Kilkenny whom he had met in a hobo camp many years earlier.
Farms, mining camps, trestles, hobo camps, and whole towns cracked and burned.
Details of life in the boxcars and hobo camps abound, and believable glimpses into the lives of the many people encountered along the way reveal common threads of poverty and family dysfunction.
