puck, in Germanic mythology

puck (pŭk), in Germanic folklore, generic name for various malevolent spirits. The medieval English pouke was often identified with the devil. However, the Puck of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is a mischievous but friendly fairy.
