An open platform for cellphones from the Open Handset Alliance (OHA). Based on Linux, Android includes a library of Java classes for building mobile applications.

Android and GPhone
Before Android debuted in November 2007, Google was expected to introduce a physical cellphone, the so-called "GPhone." Instead, the GPhone turned into the Android platform. However, Google is the developer of the Android technology with its 2005 acquisition of Android, Inc., a startup involved in mobile phone software. See Open Handset Alliance.
