The normality of a solution with respect to hydrogen ions, H+; it is related to acidity measurements in most cases by pH = log 1/2 [1/(H+)], where (H+) is the hydrogen ion concentration in gram equivalents per liter of solution.

It is actually the concentration of hydrogen ions present in your aquarium tank, and as you know, hydrogen ion concentration refers to acidity of the water in the tank.
The way a buffer works is to absorb or release H+ ions to keep the hydrogen ion concentration at a specific level.
