hydrolaccolith [‚hī·drə′lak·ə‚lith]
(geology) A frost mound, 0.3-20 feet (0.1-6 meters) in height, having a core of ice and resembling a laccolith in section. Also known as cryolaccolith. Hydrolaccolith a perennial pingo with an ice nucleus, which forms as a result of an increase in the volume of underground water with freezing under conditions of hydrostatic head in regions containing perennially frozen rocks. Hy-drolaccoliths reach 25-40 m in height and 200 m in width and have the shape of a dome with steep slopes, a gentle hill, or a billow-like rise. The nucleus is covered on top by raised, deformed deposits that are broken by cracks. In the USSR hydrolaccoliths are found primarily in Yakutia. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
