Hymen (hī`mən) or Hymenaeus (hīmənē`əs), in Greek mythology, personification of marriage, represented as a beautiful youth carrying a bridal torch and wearing a veil. HymenGreek god of marriage. He was usually thought to be a son of Apollo by one of the Muses, perhaps Calliope. Other accounts called him the son of Dionysus and Aphrodite. In Attic legend he was a beautiful youth who rescued a group of young women, including his beloved, from a gang of pirates. He obtained the girl in marriage, and their happy life was invoked in many wedding songs. hymen Anatomy a fold of mucous membrane that partly covers the entrance to the vagina and is usually ruptured when sexual intercourse takes place for the first time hymen [′hī·mən] (anatomy) A mucous membrane partly closing off the vaginal orifice. Exclusion criteria were genital prolapse of grade III (ie, anterior vaginal wall overreaching the hymenal introitus) or previous surgery, pharmacological treatment, physical therapy, or a combination of these for SUI. Risk for HIV transmission is also heightened because hymenal, vaginal, or cervical lacerations increase the transmission rate, and many of these young girls lose their virginity to HIV-infected husbands. |
