(physiology)
Excessive or above normal in tone or tension, as a muscle.
Having an osmotic pressure greater than that of physiologic salt solution or of any other solution taken as a standard.

In medical terms, this is besides called potent hypertonicity, which is a disease of the central enthusiastic system.
If excess Aldosterone causes excess sodium this causes hypertonicity in the ECF, this drains the water out of the cells causing cell dehydration.
It has been suggested that electrical stimulation may reduce the resistance to passive extension (Scheker et al 1999), reduce oedema (Pandyan et al 1996), or reduce hypertonicity (Shindo and Jones 1987)--any or all of which may affect passive range of motion.
