hypostyle hall

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.03 sec.

hypostyle hall

Imposing interior space with a flat roof that rests on many rows of columns. The design allows for the construction of large spaces without arches. It was used extensively in ancient Egypt (e.g., Temple of Amon at Karnak) and Persia. The elaborately carved pillars consumed much of the floor space and therefore assumed great importance. Hypostyles are rarely seen in more recent architecture because of more effective means of roof support.

You heard quite a lot about Egypt in first year architectural history: pylons, hypostyle halls, papyrus and lotus paradigms and of course the Stepped Pyramid of Zoser, and that bent one where they got the point seriously wrong.
The result is an astonishing interior of a dark hypostyle hall, leading to the bright and colourful circle in plan of the principal chamber and the pyramid of the lower house.
A low hypostyle hall has a grid of fat columns and is divided by a glass screen, through which are the control desk, catalogues and the reading area for current issues of magazines.
