Ictus
(also arsis or strong syllable [in syllabic-accentual versification]), a strong place in a verse, which carries the rhythmical stress; the alternation of these strong syllables with weak syllables (theses) forms the rhythm of the verse. In Russian verse in ternary meters (dactyl, amphibrach, and anapest), the ictus occurs on every third syllable and almost always coincides with the verbal stress (Kak nyne sbiraetsia veshchii Oleg, “As now the prophet Oleg intends”); in binary meters (iamb and trochee) the ictus occurs on every second syllable and does not always coincide with the verbal stress (U lukomor’ia dub zelenyi, “By the shores of a bay there is a green oak tree”).
