ilmenite (ĭl`mĕnīt), black mineral, iron titanium oxide, FeTiO3, crystallizing in the hexagonal system. It is sometimes found as tabular hexagonal crystals but occurs more commonly as small grains in igneous and metamorphic rocks and in sands derived from them. Ilmenite has been noted as an important constituent of lunar rocks. It is the commonest titanium mineral and is the most important source of this element and its compounds. Over 3 million tons of ilmenite are mined annually; important producers are the United States, Canada, Australia, and Norway. ilmeniteIron-black, heavy, metallic oxide mineral, composed of iron and titanium oxide (FeTiO3), which is the major source of titanium. It is found disseminated or in veins in gabbro, diorite, or anorthosite, as in Quebec, New York state, and Norway. It also forms large masses, as in Iron Mountain, Wyoming, and in the Ilmen Mountains, Russia, from which it derives its name. Smaller quantities are present in copper-ore veins, pegmatites, black beach sands, and placer deposits. ilmenite [il·mə‚nīt] (mineralogy) FeTiO3An iron-black, opaque, rhombohedral mineral that is the principal ore of titanium. Also known as mohsite; titanic iron ore. How to thank TFD for its existence? Based on stream sediment sampling surveys, OGS geologists say the area contains abnormal amounts of important mineral grains such as G-10 garnets, chromites, magnesium ilmenites and chrome diopsides. The composition of the ilmenites recovered would indicate that a moderate amount of resorption could be expected. The micro-probe identified: 4 OP5 (Orthopyroxene) 7 OPX (Orthopyroxene) 4 Ilmenites 1 CP1 with a CE(i) classification (high pressure Clinopyroxene from an eclogitic source) 1 CP2 (Clinopyroxene) 1 CP6 (Clinopyroxene) 9 CPX (Clinopyroxene) 2 Eclogitic Garnets with G2/G1 classifications 1 G11 garnet - which indicates a kimberlite source, possibly diamondiferous 1 Chromite 1 Olivine 8 other garnets, including 1 eclogitic, likely to be from other regional source rocks |
