To set counters, switches, and addresses to zero or other starting values at the beginning of, or at prescribed points in, a computer routine.
To begin an operation, and more specifically, to adjust the environment to the required starting configuration.

initialize

To start anew, which typically involves clearing all or some part of memory or disk.
