insulating oil [′in·sə‚lād·iŋ ‚ȯil] (materials) A chlorinated hydrocarbon, such as trichlorobenzene, mixed with fluorinated hydrocarbons, whose high dielectric strength and high flash point allow it to be used in switches, circuit breakers, and transformers as an insulator and cooling medium. Also known as electrical oil. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |

Its characteristics make it a good insulating oil, because it has a high flash point, and is difficult to burn. Plugged transformer tubes that are unlevel or low on insulating oil. Velev and his colleagues previously showed that they, could induce minuscule liquid droplets to move, hover, or merge by placing them over a circuit board coated with a film of electrically insulating oil and by controlling the electric currents that flow there. |
