interferometer: see interference interferometer. When the wavelength of the light is known, the interferometer indicates the thickness of the film by the interference patterns it forms. The reverse process, i.e., the measurement of the length of an unknown light wave, can also be carried out by the interferometer.

An instrument that measures the wavelengths of light and distances. It transmits two radio signals or beams of light and uses the interference principle (how they reinforce or neutralize each other) to determine the measurement.
