A jet issuing from an orifice into a medium with a much lower velocity, such as the stream of combustion products ejected from a jet nozzle of a gas turbine engine. This term should not be confused or mixed with jet stream, which consists of two words and means a narrow band of high-velocity wind in the upper troposphere. See also jet stream.
