joe-pye weed (jō-pī`), name for a tall North American plant (Eupatorium purpureum) of the family Asteraceae (aster aster [Gr.,=star], common name for the Asteraceae (Compositae), the aster family, in North America, name for plants of the genus Aster, sometimes called wild asters, and for a related plant more correctly called China aster (Callistephus chinensis

An infusion of the leaves and roots was formerly, and is sometimes yet, employed as a diuretic and an astringent, among other things. It is also called gravelroot, trumpetweed, and purple boneset boneset or thoroughwort , perennial North American herb (Eupatorium perfoliatum) of the family Asteraceae (aster family), having terminal clusters of small, chiefly white blossoms.

Joe-pye weed is classified in the division Magnoliophyta Magnoliophyta , division of the plant kingdom consisting of those organisms commonly called the flowering plants, or angiosperms. The angiosperms have leaves, stems, and roots, and vascular, or conducting, tissue (xylem and phloem).
