jordanon [′jȯrd·ən‚än]
(ecology) Jordanon the term proposed by Dutch botanist H. De Friese for microspecies, a taxonomic category of a rank lower than species, in honor of the botanist A. Jordan (1814–97). Jordan included about 200 small, hereditarily stable forms in the species (macrospecies) of spring whitlow grass (in the mustard family). The hereditary stability of characters in a jordanon is caused by apomyxis, that is, re-production by seed in such forms is similar to vegetative reproduction. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
