Karabash
a city in Cheliabinsk Oblast, RSFSR. It is the terminus (Pirit) of a branch of the Sverdlovsk-Cheliabinsk railroad line. Population, 20, 000 (1970). In 1910 a copper smeltery was built there as part of a mining and metallurgical combine (for the extraction of copper and the production of blister copper and zinc concentrates). The blister copper that it produces is now sent to a plant for the processing of electrolytic copper in Kyshtym. Karabash was first established at the beginning of the 18th century. It is located on the Zai River (tributary of the Kama), on a highway, 27 km northwest of the Bugul’ma railroad station (on the Ul’ianovsk-Ufa line). Petroleum is extracted.
