kittiwake: see gull gull, common name for an aquatic bird of the family Laridae, which also includes the tern and the jaeger . It is found near all oceans and many inland waters. Gulls are larger and bulkier than terns, and their tails are squared rather than forked.

 or black-legged kittiwake

White oceanic gull (Rissa tridactyla) with pearl-gray mantle, black-tipped wings, black feet, and yellow bill. Kittiwakes nest on narrow cliff ledges along the North and South Atlantic coasts. The red-legged kittiwake (R. brevirostris) is found in the Bering Sea region.
