Knowbot
(KNOWledge roBOT) A Unix-based system for software agents that roam a distributed network, such as the Internet, in order to gather or distribute information. Developed by the Corporation for National Research Initiatives, Reston, VA (www.cnri.reston.va.us) and written in Python, the Knowbot Operating System is server software that hosts and interacts with the Knowbot mobile agents.

Those knowbots, or information valets, or however those automated retrievers of information will be known, of course entail the use of expert systems; expert systems, in turn, are based on the advice of experts--the ways in which experts respond to queries, or solve a problem, or perform a particular operation.
This author first read about demon knowbots in an article by Steinberg (1990): imagine a friendly demon, working in the background of your application as a personal librarian, flinging itself across a vast network of interconnected data repositories, gathering armfuls of reference materials while you work undistracted at your word processor.
