Kurgan (k rgän`), city (1989 pop. 356,000), capital of Kurgan region, W Siberian Russia, on the Tobol River. Kurgan is the important junction of the western branches of the Trans-Siberian RR. Its factories produce agricultural and road-building equipment, machine tools, and food products. Kurgan became a town in the 17th cent. There are many ancient burial mounds (Turkic Kurgan) in the area.Kurgan a city in W Russia, on the Tobol River: industrial centre for an agricultural region. Pop.: 344 000 (2005 est.) In 1987, he finished the Kurgan Higher Military-Political Aviation School, subsequently serving as deputy security company commander for political affairs in the Order of the Red Banner Kiev Military District. Five finalists--kOnyk, Acconci Studio, Freecell, Leslie Gill Architect, and Natalie Jeremijenko/Laura Kurgan Design--were selected from an open competition to redesign the artist-founded Tribeca alternative space, which recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary. |
