The mural's images refer to kabuki and kyogen from Japan, wayang kulit shadow puppetry from Indonesia, xiqu from China and Comedia dell'Arte from Italy, as well as including a portrait of Shakespeare and the English puppet Punch.
In fact, a closer look reveals that this work sets itself apart from previous publications because, unlike the conventional focus on Okuni's women's kabuki, and wakashu kabuki, its opening essay offers readers a detailed overview regarding the background and influences of other Japanese traditional performing arts such as noh, kyogen and bunraku, all of which contributed to the rise of kabuki.
