(meteorology)
Generally, the effect of any lake in modifying the weather about its shore and for some distance downwind; in the United States, this term is applied specifically to the region about the Great Lakes.

  First, a low pressure system is trapped over the Great Lakes, which is producing bands of heavy lake effect snow.
With more than 10,000 acres of grapes, the area is known for its light, beach-like fertile soil, rolling terrain and lake effect climate, which designates it as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) called the "Lake Michigan Shore"--similar to "Napa Valley" or "Sonoma Valley" regions of California.
