A safe non-data area on a hard disk used for parking the read/write head. See load/unload ramp.
landing zone [′land·iŋ ‚zōn]
(computer science)
The data-free area on the surface of a hard disk over which the read-write head comes to rest when the computer is shut off and the disk stops rotating.

He is said to have been received at UNMIS Abyei Camp helicopter landing zone by senior Abyei administration officials headed by chief administrator and traditional chiefs including women and youth groups.
Rifleman Daniel Wild, 19, from Easington, County Durham, was blown up with Captain Mark Hale, 42, as they carried injured Lance Bombardier Matthew Hatton to a helicopter landing zone in Sangin, Helmand, on August 13.
Capt Hale and Rfn Wild, both of 2nd Battalion the Rifles, were carrying him to a helicopter landing zone when there was a second explosion, killing L/Bdr Hatton and Rfn Wild.
