lanthanide

Any of the series of 15 consecutive chemical elements in the periodic table from lanthanum to lutetium (atomic numbers 57–71). With scandium and yttrium, they make up the rare earth metals. Their atoms have similar configurations and similar physical and chemical behaviour; the most common valences are 3 and 4.

Prof Parker and his team are world-leading experts in lanthanide chemistry and have developed chemical complexes that, when illuminated, can be used as probes in samples of prostate fluid to determine citrate levels.
BioPAL is also developing innovative products for time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) based on its proprietary lanthanide chelation and colloidal technologies, and MRI imaging reagents based on its Proton-Cascade technology.
Researchers could not have analyzed such small quantities with conventional geochemical techniques, but the ion microprobe enabled researchers to determine lanthanide abundance patterns in samples and demonstrate this type of melting.
