(inorganic chemistry)
La2O3A white powder melting at about 2000°C; soluble in acid, insoluble in water; used to replace lime in calcium lights and in optical glass. Also known as lanthana; lanthanum sesquioxide; lanthanum trioxide.

By zapping graphite rods and lanthanum oxide with a laser, Jarrold and his colleagues created an abundance of metal atoms trapped inside fullerenes, converting them with "remarkably high efficiency.
Lorents, and their SRI colleagues first drilled a hole into a graphite rod, then filled the hole with lanthanum oxide.
