lapping
In reinforced concrete, the overlapping of steel reinforcing bars, or other reinforcement, so there is continuity of tensile stress in the reinforcement when the concrete member is subjected to a flexural or tensile load.

Lapping

a mechanical finishing operation for the fitting of workpieces, chiefly those with mating surfaces, for example, a valve with a valve seat. The operation consists in repeated relative movements of a tool (the lap) and the workpiece or of both the lap and workpieces together with an abrasive material. Lapping corrects the shape of workpieces within tolerance limits and reduces surface roughness.
