The fire code requires an interior safety latch on the window farthest from the door in each one-door classroom built after Jan.
Pets can gain access to the inside of the latch on the current door, which could result in injury to the pet.
Under the state fire code, classrooms that have security grilles over every window without fire sprinklers and only one door need an interior safety latch on the window farthest from the door.
