(inorganic chemistry) PbO Yellow, tetragonal crystals that melt at 888°C and are soluble in alkalies and acids; used in storage batteries, ceramics, pigments, and paints. Also known as litharge; plumbous oxide; yellow lead oxide. litharge A yellow lead monoxide (a powder of lead oxide); used as a pigment, as a drier, and as a catalyst in paints. Also see massicot.
