Although progress has recently been made by phasing out leaded gasoline in India, exposure from many other sources (including the entrainment of lead oxide from combusted leaded gasoline into dust, water, and the food system) is likely to continue for many years to come. The kids had toxic levels of lead in their blood, believed to be caused by the city's leaded gasoline. It is, however, also easy to find examples in which waiting to take precautionary measures against a risk turned out to be serious errors as well--such as the systematic poisoning of generations of urban children in the United States with leaded gasoline. |
