A flat tumbler in a lock; has a pivoted motion which is actuated by the turning of the key, thereby controlling the lock.

In 1865, with patent #48,475, Yale's invention of the pin tumbler mortise cylinder lock completely changed the art of door locks from lever tumbler locks with large keys to an adjustable pin tumbler cylinder to adjust for various door thicknesses.
