Liard (lē`ärd'), river, 755 mi (1,215 km) long, rising in the Pelly Mts., SE Yukon Territory, Canada, and flowing SE into N British Columbia, passing through the main range of the Rocky Mts., thence northeast through densely wooded country to the Mackenzie River at Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories. It is navigable to Fort Liard, an old Hudson's Bay Company post, c.165 mi (270 km) from its mouth. The South Nahanni and Fort Nelson rivers are its chief tributaries. Part of its course is followed by the Alaska Highway Alaska Highway, all-weather road, 1,523 mi (2,451 km) long, extending NW from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Fairbanks, Alaska. Liard 

a river in Canada; a left tributary of the Mackenzie River. Rises in the Pelly Mountains, Yukon Territory. Length, 1,215 km; basin area, 276,000 sq km. Its principal tributaries are the Frances, Hyland, Dease, South Nahanni, Fort Nelson, and Petitot. The Liard’s upper course is characterized by rapids, and the lower course is navigable to Fort Liard. The river freezes in October and thaws in May, reaching flood levels in spring. The average water discharge is approximately 1,000 cu m per sec (near Lower Post).
