An ear swab culture yielded Staphylococcus aureus, which was sensitive to lincomycin and vancomycin.
The strain was sensitive to penicillin, ampicillin, gentamicin, rifampin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, fusidic acid, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin and resistant to erythromycin, lincomycin, and nitrofurantoin.
Among the antibiotics used are ampicillin, bacitracin, erythromycin, lincomycin, virginiamycin, and tetracycline (Food and Drug Administration 2004), some of which are important in human clinical medicine.
